In our in-person PDIT Conferences in Mumbai in 2019 at the Goregaon Expo Center, and again in Delhi in 2020 at Pragati Maidan, we took up both Active and Intelligent Packaging and Sustainability. Andrew Manly of AIPIA Amsterdam and Roland Lartigue of Toppan came to the Delhi event. It was an interesting event with brand owners such as Nestle, Cadbury, and Mother Dairy taking part as well as leading label, in-mold, board, and flexible packaging converters including UFlex and SB Packaging. Suppliers of sustainable packaging and label solutions made brief presentations with several being recognized with awards.

In mid-March 2021, the full-day Smart Packaging for South Asia virtual event was organized and held jointly with the AIPIA. Although just preceding the Covid-19 pandemic and the first lockdown, it was a success in terms of sponsors and almost 200 participants, and above all the interest from brand owners in India and South Asia.

Listening to the speakers and discussions at recent live events in Delhi and Mumbai reveals the relevance of Active and Intelligent Packaging and Smart Sustainability. Anti-counterfeiting is a major concern amongst brands and the leading packaging companies (or early adopters) are taking the February 2022 government regulations on plastic waste management and Extended User Responsibility seriously.

One takeaway from the recent anti-counterfeiting discussions is that few customers or consumers actually scan QR codes! However, companies that see technology as the solution for the entire supply chain, such as ITC Foods, are actively promoting customer interaction and engagement through well-produced videos!

Clearly, brands need to do more to use smart packaging and labels connected to cloud technology to engender and enhance customer engagement. They need to think beyond just anti-counterfeiting and have their packaging take the next steps to condition monitoring throughout the supply chain including customer engagement right to putting the used packaging in the right waste stream. Consumers will scan QR codes when they receive something of interest for this activity – from origin stories, recipes, and entertainment – to calls to action for sustainability. Case studies of some of the Indian successes will be presented at PACK.Nxt in Mumbai.

Brand owner panelists and speakers from our conferences are outspoken about the smart packaging projects they have implemented or working on including at least one that employs smart packaging for sustainable waste collection and recycling. Clearly, the brand owners in India are receptive and actively looking for new ideas to make their packaging smarter and more engaging for the customer. Our conferences are compelling calls to action!

At a recent event, we saw the Wiliot technology video that remarkably relies on battery-less tags and ambient energy and transmitters to send several kinds of information including condition monitoring information to the cloud where it’s processed using an Artificial Intelligence engine. This technology won the Active and Intelligent category prize at the recent AIPIA Congress and Sustainability Summit in Amsterdam.

Such technologies can be an impetus for delivering our enormous production of fruit and vegetables in good condition to consumers instead of being wasted. Technology is needed to reduce food wastage on the farm side, besides saving in land, seeds, fertilizer, pesticides, logistics, and labor. If we can stop food waste, we can alleviate 10% of the climate change that the supply chain causes from farm to fork.

Time to get on board – The Future is Now!

The PACK.Nxt Conference in Mumbai is coming along well with practically all the leading global and Indian brand owners in eCommerce, Retail, FMCG, alcobev, and pharma already signing up for their presence as both speakers and participants. The sustainability side of the PACK.Nxt conference is also strong with the presence of the pioneering Indian recycler and other experts in the field. One session will demystify the waste management rules and Extended User Responsibility compliance, and another will present actual solutions and case studies in the redesign of circular packaging structures.

Please come ready for lively and informed discussion and interaction at PACK.Nxt. Although to some, our topics sound futuristic, a recent eMailer to brand owners suggests, that they are not! As was heard at the recent drupa promotion conferences, ‘The Future is Now.’ It’s been a while since we had. Why not take the opportunity at your doorstep to be a part of some relevant and sensible technology discussion with take-home and actionable value?

At the PACK.Nxt Conference in Mumbai at the Lalit Hotel on 18 January, leading brand owners and technology suppliers will discuss Brand Protection, Authentication, Supply Chain Tracking, Customer Engagement, the Extended User Responsibility Regulations, and Sustainable and Recyclable Packaging Structures. In our in-person PDIT Conferences in Mumbai in 2019 at the Goregaon Expo Center, and then again in Delhi in at the end of 2020 at Pragati Maidan, we devoted considerable time to what is known as Active and Intelligent Packaging. Andrew Manly of AIPIA Amsterdam took part in that event and so did Roland Lartigue of Toppan. It was an interesting event with brand owners such as Nestle, Cadbury, and Mother Dairy taking part as well as leading label, in-mold, board, and flexible packaging converters. There was also a sustainable component to that event wherein we recognized several awardees for their sustainable packaging entries.

Then in mid-March 2021, we did a full-day Smart Packaging for South Asia virtual event jointly with the AIPIA. Although this event just preceded the onset of the pandemic and the lockdowns, it was a success in terms of sponsors, participants, and above all interest in the topic from brand owners in India and South Asia.

Subsequently, at recent events in this year, there have been single sessions on Active and Intelligent Packaging and a full two-day event on what can be called Brand Protection, Authentication, and Anti-Counterfeiting. Listening to the speakers and discussions at these events reveals both the relevance of the topic and how far it has taken root in the Indian consumer product industry and in its packaging and labels. One takeaway from the anti-counterfeiting conference was that very few customers or consumers actually scan QR codes!

Clearly, brands need to do more to use this connected to the cloud technology to create more customer engagement. And to do this they need to think beyond just anti-counterfeiting and have their packaging take the next steps to condition monitoring throughout the supply chain. Consumers are not going to scan QR codes until they get something interesting or meaningful from this activity – anything from origin stories to calls to action for sustainability. Actual case studies of some of the Indian successes will be presented at PACK.Nxt in Mumbai.

At another conference in New Delhi, there was a session on smart packaging and two of the brand owner panelists were speakers from our in-person conference in December 2020. It was gratifying that they each spoke about several smart packaging projects that they had implemented or were taking forward, including one that employed smart packaging for sustainable waste collection and recycling. Clearly, for brand owners in India, these conferences are an opportunity to make their packaging smarter and more engaging for the customer. They are compelling calls to action!

It was also at this conference that we saw the Wiliot technology video that quite remarkably relies on battery-less tags and ambient transmitters to send several kinds of condition monitoring information to the cloud where it’s processed using an Artificial Intelligence engine. This technology won the Active and Intelligent category prize at the recent AIPIA Congress and Sustainability Summit in Amsterdam.

We had been wondering about how this technology worked and when we met the Wiliot team and it was explained to us, it was a revelation that made eminent sense. The technology can be an impetus for delivering our enormous production of fruit and vegetables in good condition to consumers. Not only will it reduce our food wastage on the farm side, but it will also save land, seeds, fertilizer, and pesticides. It is reliably said that if we can stop food waste, we can alleviate 10% of the climate change that this supply chain causes from farm to fork.

The PACK.Nxt Conference in Mumbai is coming along well with practically all the leading global and Indian brand owners in eCommerce, Retail, FMCG, alcobev, and pharma already signing up their presence as both speakers and participants. Although there will be a session to demystify the waste management rules and Extended User Responsibility compliance, we are planning to present actual solutions and case studies in the redesign of circular packaging structures.

We anticipate lively discussion and interaction at PACK.Nxt. Although to some, our topics sound futuristic, a recent eMailer to brand owners suggests, that they are not! Mani Vajipey, co-founder and CEO of Banyan Nation will be speaking at the Pack.Nxt conference in Mumbai

What did we learn in Amsterdam about smart packaging and sustainability? We learned that technology is the connection between brand protection, authentication, supply chain management, customer engagement and sustainability. As AIPIA’s managing director, Eef de Ferrante, said in his welcome address, “There is so much more to Smart Packaging than a role in sustainability,” Although this was evident by the leading edge smart technologies exhibited and presented, de Ferrante asserted several times during the two days, that one can keep hoping that culture and habits will improve somehow – and that someday sustainability and transparency will arrive – but the real and more realistic answer is technology! While introducing Angela Morgan of Aptar as she was making a presentation on food waste technologies, he again asserted, “The solution to food waste is technology.”

Thus, ultimately this is what PACK.Nxt in Mumbai must be about. We can debate and discuss the problems of the counterfeiting of products and the challenges of collecting, sorting and recycling waste forever. The solution, however, is technology and this is what the conference is for. It is for untangling and demystifying the Plastic Waste Management rules of the government and the latest revisions to Extended User Responsibly regulations suggested on 16 October 2023.

This will be done by several brand owners and one of the leading technologists in the country from a company that has taken this challenge seriously across several continents. As the managing director of that company says, “Sustainability is not just the new structure or redesign of a single consumer pack, it is an eco-system and much more.”

New structures and designs that incorporate recyclates will be discussed. Among our partners in this area are GLS Films, a producer of sustainable and recyclable flexible packaging and materials and Banyan Nation, a technology-driven pioneer in plastic recycling, whose co-founder and CEO will speak and take part in a couple of sessions.

On the active and intelligent side, we will present actionable solutions and Indian case studies of anti-counterfeit and customer engagement, which can, among other things, lead to packaging reaching the correct waste stream. Presented for discussion will be a scorecard for the various types of packaging structures rated for their collection in the country and their level of recycling capability.

For PACK.Nxt, there are several returning sponsors from our previous Smart Packaging events such as Avery Dennison, Fasciculus, Uflex, and new sponsors such as the pioneering Indian plastic waste recycler Banyan Nation, Shriram Veritech in brand protection, and the GLS Group, a leading upcoming packaging conglomerate in flexible and liquid packaging, which is also a producer of film and aluminum foil. Monotech’s Tracesci and Kurz are also supporters and several others are likely to commit in the coming days by the time this reaches you in print.

Knowledge and technology to take home and act on

PACK.Nxt is a full-day smart, active, and sustainable packaging in-person event that will address the themes of brand protection, authentication, anti-counterfeiting, and supply chain efficiencies, especially in food, beverages, pharmaceuticals, and retail. Approximately 30 speakers and participants from leading brands such as Marico, Indo Nissin, Polycab India, Bayer Consumer Health Care, Ajanta Pharma, PepsiCo AMESA, Reliance Retail, Lupin, Sun Pharma, Mankind Pharma, AMARAI, ITC, Pureplay Skin Sciences, Emami, Too Yum Foods, and Britannia have already committed to taking part.

Numerous packaging converters and services suppliers, who incorporate advanced authentication and supply technologies in their work for global customers in the food, FMCG, pharmaceutical, and retail industries, are confirmed speakers and participants. Amsterdam-based AIPIA and ASPA are among the association partners for the event.

Andrew Manly, communications director of AIPIA, says, “We are very excited at the prospect of bringing PACK.nxt to India. The country and the region are hungry for knowledge about Smart Packaging technologies and we expect huge interest from brands, supply chain actors, and technology providers. We are delighted to be working with two of the most experienced organizers in the market, including IppStar, which has organized more than 40 knowledge events across the country for the print and packaging sector in which it has more than 40 years of experience.”

We are hoping to create another interactive and lively event that the IppGroup and IppStar are known for. Narendra Paruchuri once described these as, “Nuts and bolts events.” Another frequent participant in our early days Pranav Parikh described them as, “Conferences with take home value.” We look forward to meeting the industry leaders at the event – especially those who see that the future is an opportunity for those who can make technology decisions in the here and now.

Packaging South Asia — resilient, growing and impactful — daily, monthly — always responsive

The multi-channel B2B in print and digital 17-year-old platform matches the industry’s growth trajectory. The Indian, South Asian, Southeast Asian, and Middle East packaging industries are looking beyond the resilience of the past three years. They are resuming capacity expansion and diversification, with high technology and automation in new plants and projects.

As we present our 2024 publishing plan, India’s real GDP growth for the financial year ending 31 March 2024 will exceed 6%. The packaging industry growth will match the GDP growth in volume terms and surpass it by at least 3% in terms of nominal growth allowing for price inflation in energy, raw materials, consumables, and capital equipment.

The capacity for flexible film manufacturing in India increased by 45% over the past four years. With orders in place, we expect another 20% capacity addition in 2024 and 2025. Capacities in monocartons, corrugation, aseptic liquid packaging, and labels are grown similarly. As the consumption story returns over the next six months, we expect

demand to return and exceed the growth trajectory of previous years. The numbers are positive for most of the economies in the region – and as shown by our analytics, our platform increasingly reaches and influences these.

For responsible and sustainable packaging, with its attendant regulations and compliances, there is significant headroom to grow in India and the region. Our coverage includes the entire packaging supply chain – from concept to shelf and to waste collection, sorting, and recycling.

We target brand owners, product managers, raw material suppliers, packaging designers and converters, and recyclers. This is a large and complex canvas – the only thing that can work is your agile thinking and innovation together with our continuous learning and persistence.

The coming year looks to be an up year in this region, and this is the right time to plan your participation and marketing communication – in our rich and highly targeted business platform with human resources on the ground. Share your thoughts and plans and to inspire and mobilize our editorial and advertising teams!

Both organizers, the AIPIA and Packaging Europe are supporting the PACK.Nxt Conference in Mumbai on 18 January 2023 at the Lalit Hotel Photo PSA

The initial response for PACK.Nxt registrations is excellent. The time and place seem right for a serious look at technologies and solutions that make the supply chain and packaging smarter. PACK.Nxt has also received the support of ASPA, the Authentication Solutions Providers Association. Rohit Dewan and Naresh Khanna have just returned from attending the fascinating AIPIA Congress and Sustainability Summit in Amsterdam where they understood the need to develop similar proactive solutions for brand protection, transparency and smart sustainability in India and South Asia.

For PACK.Nxt there are several returning sponsors from our previous Smart Packaging events such as Avery Dennison, Fasciculus, Uflex and new sponsors such as the pioneering Indian plastic waste recycler Banyan Nation, Shriram Veritech in brand protection, and the GLS Group a leading upcoming packaging conglomerate in flexible and liquid packaging that is also a producer of film and aluminum foil. Other sponsors such as Monotech Systems are also supporting the event with several others likely to commit in the coming days and weeks.

IPPStar, Packaging South Asia and Threefold are organizing PACK.Nxt, a full-day smart, active, and sustainable packaging in-person event that will address the themes of brand protection, authentication, anti-counterfeiting, and supply chain efficiencies, especially in food, beverages, pharmaceuticals, and retail.

The conference, supported by the Amsterdam-based AIPIA, will take place at the Lalit, Mumbai on 18 January 2024. The Mumbai conference will address the role of smart packaging in designing recyclable packaging and its recycling. It will discuss the Indian experience of using recyclates and resins in lateral packaging solutions digitally maintaining the transparency and authenticity of the process from waste collection to resin.

As Naresh Khanna, editor, Packaging South Asia, explains, “The Active and intelligent packaging market in India was valued at US$ 1.2 billion in 2020 and is projected to reach US$ 2.1 billion by 2026, growing at a CAGR of 9.5%. Government policy is also supporting this development with regulations on traceability of pharmaceutical products and medical devices particularly important.”

Smart and active packaging can extend shelf-life, reduce microbial and bacterial growth, and monitor the real-time condition of perishables as well as create a more efficient supply chain by better use of data, which can make a major impact on delivering nutrition and saving resources.

PACK.Nxt 2024 at The Lalit, in Mumbai on January 18 is an unparalleled event uniting more than 60 speakers, 350+ delegates, and 100+ companies. It offers a transformative experience and opportunity to explore innovations and cases in smart packaging, sustainability, circularity, brand protection and authentication, and customer engagement.

The discussions will be led by industry leaders, shaping the future of sustainable and responsible packaging in the country. Don’t miss this opportunity to connect, learn, and stay ahead of the industry trend that connects the entire supply chain of consumer products, food, pharma, FMCG, and retail to digital data for authentication, condition monitoring, and customer engagement.
